I need someone to read what I wrote below, this is a cover letter, and tell me wether it sounds appropriate or not. Thanks
------------------------------
I have couple of good reasons to apply for this position. I think I have a lot to offer, as I had a similar position in the recent past.
First of all as an engine enthusiast, I only see myself working for car manufacturer, for an ambitious and innovative manufacturer like Mc Laren.
As you will read it in my resume, all my educational background is about automotive engineering: I graduated from Ecole Centrale and IFP School in France both time majoring engine and mechanical engineering. At the IFP School I have taken an engine dedicated course, taught by automotive professionals (Renault, Peugeot, Delphi, Bosch…) which gave me a versatile engine background (from 2-stroke engine to industrial engine). I have also studied in the USA, during an internship at the MIT, where I learned a lot on engine combustion at Pr Heywood’s lab.
I have a solid experience in vehicle and engine development that definitely match what you are looking for. During 5 five I was in charge of emission and fuel consumption requirements, controlling different task teams (, calibration, certification, engine and vehicle design) to reach the emission and fuel consumption targets assigned by the project. My missions were :
- to build emission and fuel consumption roadmaps in order to predict what the vehicle emissions and consumptions levels will acheive with its technical defintion. I also had to submit alternative technical definitions which could make more sens for the project (emission, fuel consumption Vs cost-planning-investments). To build up thoses fuel and emission road maps, I used test results (vehicle, engine) combined with simulation softwares : CRUISE (AVL) and in house Matlab softwares (working with the simulation team in order to get upgrades when needed, for exemple new aftertreatment device, new homologation cycle)
- to work on the vehicle definition with the vehicle engineering team in order to reach the contracté fuel consumption target : gear ratio choice, rolling resistance and vehicle weight.
- to be involved with the certifcation procedure with the certification team : I now know quite well the current European certification procedures and legisltation (and affiliate countries, such as Australia, Taiwan,...) but I also have some knowledge on Japan, Korea and US legislations
- to define engineering targets to the engine and the vehicle : emission targets on roller bench (to the calibration team), engine test bench
- to write RFQ (for systems such as EGR, catalyst, injection…) relevant with the engineering targets, and help buyers team to select the best suppliers providing by them cost-performance ratio
- to write test programs that would allow to calculate emission and fuel consumption all along the duration of the project : steady state test bench, roller test bench
- to analyze results and decide following activities to reach the target : combustion tests, vehicle tests, with a close and extensive day to day work with calibration team (experience with UK's Ricardo PLC)
- to work with customer usage teams to define what are our relevant/critical customers, hence the dedicated test needed to know their emissions / fuel consumption
- to guarantee l'atteinte of Fuel Consumption figures, and emission for the certification.
I frequently reported work progress and Fuel consumption / emissions situation to program directors, so I am quiete used to refer in a concise way. We eventually managed to put on the market a breakthrough emission engine on time, within the cost targets during critical time (2008 crisis).
The last year in that position, I also developed standardized method to put emission and fuel consumption under control during a vehicle development : what test or simulation to perform, when to perfom, how to use it to monitor emission and fuel consumption.
I also have a good view on the future challenges and technological innovations that are studied to take on those challenge
I am currently an advanced engineering supervisor, I have learned a lot about technical innvotion that could be selected on future vehicule to relever the future key challenge. My missions are
- to be informed of the future legislations and upcoming customer challenges : I know what future challenge are beyond 2014 (new cycle, new procedure, EURO7, customer requiermement evolutions...) and what technical solutions may step in / be approriate.
- to make synthesis over technical innovations under study within Renault and plot out their potential for the customer (Fuel Consumption, Fun to drive, NVH, emission), in order tochoose the right technology for futur engine.
- to build up mid and long term (2015-2020) engine line up, and define the technology that should be retained in this line up to reach Product targets (CAFE targets, CO2 emission level, fun to drive, NVH, performances…).
- to share position with counterpart at D during CO2 workshop in order to define potentiel synergy with D's requierment
- to define human ressources needed to follow Advandced engineering projects that study innovation technology
For all those reasons, I think I am the right person for the job, and I can bring you my experience on fuel consumption (prediction, certification, overview on potential technologies tomatch long term targets) and development (work with tuning team) . I look forward to discuss with you more in details about my motivations and background. |
